The Val d'Orcia railway line between Asciano and Monte Antico was closed to ordinary traffic
in September 1994 because it was looked on as "dead wood"; thanks to the Nature Train project,
it has been reopened as a tourit line on which vintage carriages and steam trains travel on holidays.
Crassing the Crete Senesi and the valley of the Orcia river at the foot of Monte Amiata, the
railway is situated an area of great environmental importance. The Nature Train runs alongside
rivers and streams, along panoramic ridges or high viaducts, in direct contact with the flora
and fauna of this exceptional area.
To stress the naturalistic value of this initiative, Sienese section of the Club Alpino Italiano
has laid out a network of paths through the most interesting places along the railway line.
